With his collection ‘first there was Nothing,’ Remi took the risk of creating a collection without a background story. “In my final year I felt so much pressure to find the perfect story for a graduation collection. I thought I was getting lost with the identity of my own interests. Therefore, I wanted to take a step back and create a collection from nothing. I saw it as an experiment to see if I could find my true self whilst not being influenced by any external input.” By eliminating a background story he mainly focussed on researching shapes and textiles.

In his designs he avoids the traditional rules of tailoring. For this reason the garments are rather difficult to identify. “I like the idea that people could have a discussion about the name of the actual garment. It’s not a trenchcoat nor a blazer, it’s not a skirt nor a hat and there is not always a specific front or back. In my opinion it makes the garments more interesting and mysterious. Eventually, this collection is about nothing.” With this collection he likes to question the value and importance of a background story. He challenges people to create their own opinion or story whilst looking at his collection.
