The project started looking for the value of culture, ethnicity and folklore in fashion and trying to understand why we put racial labels. During my research, I realised that everything is somehow culturally inspired, so everything by definition is ethnic, therefore, we use this word erroneously. The reason why we do this is because we have been used to see the Western world as the dominant one in our society, creating a distortion of our perception: black, yellow or whatever mean race, ethnic, a label to put, while white means no culture, not ethnic, no label.
Within this system, I see the racial label as a distortion as well, connected with an expectation (for example thinking that an african designer is gonna make prints) and seen as representative of the entire identity of a person. I strongly believe that our identities aren’t only made by our ethnicity, this one is a part able to shape more or less ourselves, but it isn’t everything, therefore, this is why I don’t believe in labels and that’s where the title of my collection “unidentified” comes from.
