What is science fiction? Most commonly, it is held to be a set of predictions about the future. Cyborg’, a term intimately linked to the idea of Sci-fi, was coined by Manfred Clynes and Nathan S. Kline during the counterculture revolution of the 1960s. The term ‘cyborg’ denotes any kind of organism that has both organic and biomechatronic body parts with physical or mental abilities far exceeding its counterpart. This is a form of reverse psychology, as it implies a certain human anxiety, a fear of becoming consumed or dominated by cyborgs capable of destroying an entire human generation. So when the idea of cyborg was formed, the creators had to make sure that these cyborgs would be controlled – would effectively be made to serve human purposes.
This collection is based on this argument and seeks to discover the possibilities latent in it. From the last scene of the movie Metropolis (1927), when Maria finds the real her deep down in her heard and got the control of her robotic body back. This struggle inspired the construction of this collection The idea of struggle and two of different mindsets inside one body represents human fear of the future and the fragmentation of modern individuals. The feeling of living underneath someone’s mind/thought is a way of expressing this constraint. When there are conflicts, there will be breaking-through as well. Thus, in the collection most of the looks leave some body parts uncovered, revealing the fragility/latent possibility of the change of our human condition.
The color range of this collection evokes chaos while retaining a sense of hope. The use of crimson and electric blue create pure futurist notes, which are then rendered chaotic by the introduction of lemon and bright aqua. The final touch of white, meanwhile, represents hope. The metallic fabric brings the idea of cyborgs to life, lastly, while the translucent fabric indicates the fragility of human nature, by exposing our human flesh.
