Tom Van Der Borght (1978) is a fashion designer who lives and works in Gent. He is a graduate of the Stedelijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Sint Niklaas. Tom Van Der Borght is not in search of traditional beauty or honey-sweet cutesiness. Bold combinations of bright colors, psychedelic graphics and textures make for a true bombardment of the senses. This new kid on the fashion block is not only exploring the boundaries of traditional beauty. He boldly crosses
them to create his own standard of beauty. TVDB is always on the look-out for the unconventional and puts into question mainstream social structures. What does society considers normal and why? What is weird and why? His garments serve as armor for strong super humans in an urban setting. Yet all is not serious. A sense of humor and self-depreciative playfulness show in the way he teasingly covers and reveals in his designs. Another hint of this can be seen in his use of extreme detailing. Throughout his impeccably finished couture collections strong influences of streetwear reverberate.
All prints used in Van Der Borght’s collection are originals. Modern, industrial techniques such as printing and digital knit happily co-exist with traditional handicrafts. Already during his studies Fashion Design Van der Borght was a promising student. After an internship at Maureen De Clerq, he won as third year student the Triumph Inspiration Award 2011 and could show his collection at Berlin Fashion Week. After graduating in june 2012,Tom Van der Borght showed his graduation collection “Church Of Chica” in Berlin and Paris Fashion Weeks Spring/Summer 2013. After winning the ASVOFF ‘05 award for best emerging talent with his fashion movie ’Danny’, he founded his label on 1st january 2013. Only two weeks after starting up his business, he won the Premium Young Designer Award during Berlin Fashion Week FW13 with his latest collection ‘Aponycalypse’.

A NAKED SAFARI

TVDB loves humanity !
For his collection 2015, the designer returns to the human side, the naked skin, the basic needs and the core of home. Entering the safe zone of his own domestic environment, he investigates the hidden layers of restlessness, lust for adventure and need for exploration.

Nudity exists in harmony with ourselves! A vision of a pure and pristine society appears by creating a community of
reborn men and women returning to the ultimate level of virginity. They’re the sperms and seeds in a new and unique« Unisexism », undertaking a safari in fertile landscapes. This domestic garden-adventure is about exploring and exploiting the daily, going under the skin.

Where the home at first is a symbol of safety and security, it rapidly evolves into an introspective and erotic trip. Taking inspiration from vintage movies about naturism, the collection glows like a highly oversaturated film. Homewear becomes utility wear, nature gets interpreted in a digital and technical way. Binoculars, compasses, jeeps,… they all become tools to study the human act of fertilisation. Giraffes and monkeys friendly pass by the love nest. Sexuality is conceived as a non-pornographic, soft-erotic dream state where unison of body, soul and mind is placed in a funkadelic garden of Eden, or better a garden of TVDB.

« A Naked Safari » is a continuation of TVDBs highly-personal universe. A wide series of printed basic pieces goes
hand in hand with crazilicious knitwear, madly hand worked pieces, techno-tribal prints, 3D printed helmets and unique lasercutted screenprinted accessories. Please DO feed the animals and let your wild side run free !
