“TitanicDenim is awesome” Katy Perry’s stylist, Johnny Wujek on the UK’s Newest Street-Chic Brand

The UK’s newest street-chic fashion brand, TitanicDenim. Housed in the Titanic Quarter, birthplace of the voyager itself, Founder & Designer Marie Nancarrow creates bespoke original fashion pieces from re-cycled denim. These are catching the eye of stylists, artists and celebrities across the globe. Katy Perry’s stylist Johnny Wujek called TitanicDenim “Awesome!” while Eric Underwood, Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet, London, describes it simply as “Brilliant!”
TitanicDenim pieces are fashion statements with a nod to the rich 400-year cultural history of Belfast, from the logo based on a rivet from the docks, to the hard wearing denim itself with design inspiration taken from Belfast’s rock n’roll past, during which time Marie’s dad played guitar with Van Morrison. In addition the recycled nature of production and the artistry involved is a nod to the future, a great example of ‘on trend’ sustainable fashion. A social model, a percentage of profits will go directly to projects that alleviate child poverty in traditional sweat shop areas in India.
Marie Nancarrow describes her vision: “Titanic Denim is an empowering brand. Wearers make a very simple statement: ‘Be you.’ In this androgynous world, women will feel empowered, confident, sexy and comfortable in their own skin. Our menswear allows men to ooze confidence with a subtle undertone of security enhancing their masculinity. Wanting to ‘stand out’ may be interpreted as insecurity; but being yourself is a measure of confidence.
From the 1850s to 1914, Belfast was known as the shipyard of the world, not bad for a place with only 300,000 people! Good, honest, confident people who knew who they were, with a world class work ethic and a solid identity. This is what TitanicDenim brings to the world: an authentic end product steeped in rich history that, through our recycling and social philosophy, is sustainable and good for the world, not to mention the people who wear it.”
The aim is to drive profits back into sweat shop spaces in developing countries where it is assumed a percentage of the recycled denim has likely come from over the years. TitanicDenim also hopes to fund education and create jobs for children, whilst also raising awareness of sweat shop practices that continue to this very day.
Marie explains: “We have no option but to accept that this is where a lot of denim has originated. But what’s done is done. All we can do now is attempt to engineer a reversal of the process; at TitanicDenim, we would like to go full circle, bringing financial assistance to and implement change in the communities that have been affected by these production methods over the years.
For more than four centuries, the people of Belfast have been achieving great things, making their mark on the global stage, and being successful. Belfast is like a phoenix rising from the ashes as a formidable force for good, ready to overcome any barriers and misconceptions.
