Susanne Roti recently graduated from Oslo National Academy of the Arts and was selected as one of few honoured students to participate in Designers’ Nest during Copenhagen Fashion Week. Before she decided to go into fashion she studied art history at the University of Bergen. This inspired her to utilize elements of the past to create something new. Historical references are an important feature of her design, which draws on the 1920`s surreal art, iconic garments and menswear classics. Drawing has always been a passion to her, and is an essential part of her design as her precisely hand-drawn illustrations are printed digitally on textiles. The works appear poetic and have an androgynous expression. Currently she is working on a follow-up collection. In addition she is working as a freelance illustrator.

With an aim to create timeless and authentic design the collection emphasizes Roti`s printed ballpoint pen drawings. She embraces drawing because of its illusory quality, but also for its old tradition. Furthermore the time- consuming drawing process adds the value of the handmade to her design. The collection draws inspiration from the surreal movement and reinterprets menswear classics like the trench coat, duffle coat, blazer, shirt, and a knitted sweater with shawl collar. The boxy silhouette makes each piece resemble a canvas, consisting of both sewn and drawn details. Sewn details indicate the specific garment, whereas drawn fragments communicate the fabric and texture of the garment. Through this she attempts to challenge the observer’s perceptions. Because the drawing represents the actual garment it is printed on, it makes past and present blend together.
