Stacey Wall is an Irish, London based designer. She graduated with a degree in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins in 2017 specialising in knitwear. For her final collection she looked back into her Irish roots, and found an endless source of inspiration in their craft, textiles and folk traditions. Her main influences were local folk groups from the 70s such as ‘The Biddy Boys’, ‘Strawboys’ and ‘Wren Boys’. For research she visited Ireland and met with the curator of the National Design museum, discovering samplers of Irish textile manipulation from the 16th and 17th century and also looking into the history of Irish dress and the different craft techniques that are particular to the country such as knitting, weaving, crochet, lace making.
The silhouettes and shapes come from the images from the costumes and outfits of the different folk groups that she looked at. The main textile featured is a knit technique that she developed by feeding woven fabrics into the knitting machine.
