Mindful of the way the Indian society’s patriarchal structure lays down rules of what is and what isn’t appropriate, the founder of Polite Society, Surmai Jain decided to shatter the boundaries these rules had drawn in the world of fashion. The young designer graduated from the prestigious NIFT, Mumbai in Fashion Communication and FIT, New York in Marketing and Advertising, and developed a special place in her heart for art and fashion. After a brief stint as a graphic designer, Surmai realized that building her own fashion label was her true calling.

Through Polite Society, she wants to create a label that welcomes the youth who seek originality, freedom and are not afraid of being their authentic selves. Each of her works upholds the four ideals of the brand - Power, Sex , Integrity and Comfort. To avoid becoming one with the crowd, the young designer holds her brand’s values close to her heart and ensures that each collection has elements of her personal life in them.

Surmai believes in trusting her intuitions when it comes to designing. She is not a huge fan of elaborate sketches when ideating a new collection. Her strong visual direction, sense of creativity and a rebellious vision is what brings fresh perspective to the world of fashion, through Polite Society.
