Oscar and Rose

In December 2016, Ms. Noor Thandiwe Modise launched her very first women’s ready-to-wear clothing line, Oscar and Rose, O & R. Each collection was inspired by Ms. Modise’s life experiences as a child and now as an adult. Born and raised in exile countries such as Zambia and Sweden, then also living in Ottawa, Canada as a daughter of a diplomat, in comparison, each collection is a chapter out of her book.
The O & R woman has got her head in the stars and her feet on the ground. She works very hard but also plays hard; she is ambitious but humble; O & R also represents the masculine and feminine sides of the O & R woman or the eccentric and conventional woman. She is a woman who is a nomad but, yet is very settled with who she is.
This first collection O & R of Spring/Summer ’16 is her interpretation of when she landed in her country for the first time, hence the name ‘Ekaya’ meaning at home in isiXhosa. At 16, she got to learn more about the different cultures and tribes in South Africa; it is with this in mind that Ms. Modise has designed Ekaya with portraits of the South African women in traditional wear, printed on 3 different types of fabric; chiffon satin, gabardine and scuba.
The Ekaya collection consists of 19 looks that include; maxi and shift dresses, wide-legged and denim style pants, a pencil skirt, jumpsuit, just to name a few! With a combination of modern silhouettes and the hand drawn portraits, she has created a unique perspective of the O & R woman.
