Mona Cordes

Mona Cordes is showcasing her new collection ‘PÄLÏLÄ’. Palila means free spirit in French Polynesia, ready to soar through the world with grace and beauty. Cordes would define herself as a free spirit soul. Since early school, she went to tourist travel agencies to find material and dreamt of a life as a nomad traveller. Cordes went on an eye-opening time away, travelling by herself to Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and French Polynesia. She got inspired by nature and the patterns within glamorous natures woven together. The pattern of the spiral kept appearing in all places.
Curly growing ferns in deep rainforests, mosquito incense repellent spirals, galaxies and spirals in Polynesian tattoo art. Animals are spiralling into themselves, for their protection like snails or snakes.
The symbol of the spiral is highly dominant and universal. It is an open-ended symbol, and its form is visually pleasing, and calming. Although spiralling can also mean spiralling within your thoughts like in a labyrinth. Different cultures use the spiral as a spiritual symbol. The spiral is a volute spring to hold, make contact, and float and to travel inside into yourself, to reflect. It also stands for growth and progress.
The heritage of the spiral is an ancient art from all over the world, back from the Stone Age in Europe, to pre-dynamic Egypt, Peru and China. In Māori and Polynesian societies, the Pacific Spirals are often sighted. The Polynesian word Koru is a Māori word meaning folded, coiled, used in tattooing, and it is used to identify the unfolding fern. The fern symbol stands for the continuity of life. The symbol of the sun surrounding the major koru is added as a wish for positivity for a great change and a new start. Nature's beauty and Polynesian pattern let Cordes mind and body open up and began to bloom intensely. Inspirations for ‘PÄLÏLÄ’ were forming.
