In 2015, Miranda graduated with honours from the internationally acclaimed Bachelor of design (Fashion) (Honors) at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Additionally was awarded the ‘progress and engagement’ academic award from the honorary course lecturer Robin Healy. Her preparation at this innovative college exposed her to a wide range of technical skills, involving 3D pattern making, textile manipulation, surface embellishment and experimental design; a process which profoundly informed her graduate collection, Guepe.

GUEPE

‘Guepe’ (French for bug) draws metallic colours and surface textures from a secret world that lies under the microscope, focusing on a southern French wasp; the ‘cuckoo’. I collaborated with an entomologist (Dr Ken Walker) from the Melbourne museum, to generate these beautiful and detailed close-up images that were the soul source of inspiration for this collection. The collection has explored in depth experimental research into textile manipulation, and recreating these unique textures in an innovative way. The use of fur encased and embroided within the laser cut leather patterns represents the tiny hairs that give the insect feeling, stemming from the apparent textures and colours that can be seen only under the microscope.
This collection explored the limitations that we allow ourselves to have, and exaggerates small details so small aspects within our big world can be seen in all their glory.
