“Once There Was”

“It is beautiful because there is mortality.
It is sad because once there was happiness.”

Continuing his study of inevitability and the pathos of life, Ming’s Spring / Summer 2016 collection is inspired by his late grandfather, a man who went from having time on his side to suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Influenced by casual sportswear and military uniforms, the silhouettes of Spring / Summer 2016 are gamine, clean and with a comfortable and relaxed fit. In contrast to straightforward silhouettes, the unexpected placements of details - such as faux pockets, random cutouts and additional panels - work with an array of different textures, such as denim, lace, and printed leather across the lineup demonstrating a sense of experimentation and suggesting a mechanised randomness to the collection.

For the first time, in his Spring / Summer 2016 collection, Ming introduces self-developed textiles. Collaborating with Demian Hung from Taiwan-based concept life style store Fukurou Living, a series of customized silk-blend jacquard textiles were created inspired by x-ray scans of the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The artworks are composed of koi fishes, plants and human brains and have been placed on textiles referenced from the traditional Chinese Tang suit. The combination of delicate graphics accompanies the lightweight textiles, gives a softer and subtler touch to the nostalgic and rather sombre background story.

“Once There Was” is a ready-to-wear collection that reflects Ming’s distinctive aesthetic and conveys both the process of fading and the inevitability of mortality.
