MIAO (b.1999) is a Singaporean fashion designer, movement director, stylist and choreographer.

She now runs her own brand, MIAO ATELIER. In her artistic practice, she sees herself as a fantasy creator, with works often built upon fantasy, surrealism, carnivalesque characters, oddities, peculiarity and childlike serendipity. Her work centres around challenging the status quo, and fosters the exploration of new, disruptive ways of working. traversing along the light and dark sides of human nature, her creative approach involves play and the symbolic breaking of rules.

She proudly dons the hat of a sorcerer, conjuring up whimsical and quirky objects with the sole purpose of spreading joy far and wide. Known for her signature maximalist style, her creations dance to the rhythm of contrasting textures, materials, print and ornament, transforming them into theatrical wonders. Designed with careful consideration in the process, her creations often result in clothing-like accessories that are interchangeable through different body parts, giving versatility in objects, and moves away from traditional binary design considerations.

A JESTER'S ACT

In a world full of excess materialism held by the upper classes, A JESTER’S ACT explores the inequality in a rapidly changing world, in an era where we are witnessing the full effects of climate change, fighting against capitalist order, and of extreme political divisions. This project uses playful juxtaposition, exploring both the light and dark sides of human nature, bringing parody and humour into the conversation. Drawing inspiration from clowns, jesters, oddities, carnivalesque characters as well as Victorian fashion, the collection communicates glamour, opulence, & play, through the use of contrasting textures, materials, print and ornament.

Inspired by the role of the Court Jester, for despite their profession, which entails them to do comedic acts, they also served as advisors to the court, speaking the truth when no one else would. The collection is also inspired by the three types of clowns present in the circus— The Whiteface, The Auguste, as well as The Tramp, which was inspired by homeless people in the 19th century. These 3 archetypes of clowns are very reflective of class distinction in modern society, and the collection is divided to represent each distinct archetype. A JESTER’S ACT aims to empower the wearer with the jester’s spirit, and encourages one to take up space in the world. Be ridiculous, be too much!
