Mrigini Iyer is a Toronto Based Fashion Designer and a Visual Artist. She went to George Brown College in Toronto, and Columbia College in Chicago for her BFA degree. She has been part of the industry professionally starting at the age of 18, and was part of a duo called G aur M. She (as G aur M) has showcased her work at Vancouver and Washington DC Fashion Week, and a local Toronto Fashion Show. Her work is like spices-a blend of rawness of nature, cultures and silhouettes. This blend has also been featured in various magazines in Toronto and New York with works of different established artists. Now at the age of 22 and with more experience in her "peti" , this is what she has to say...

A Letter from the designer -

I am mostly a self-thought artist and have always been an outsider wherever I have resided, be it within the Indian community or outside of it. Not completely knowing where I fit, I yearn for a sense of belonging, although always feeling strong about my roots. I created different projects within Meri Peti because each one of them reflects different emotions of myself, and my want to fill-in the lack of representation through different mediums of art. Seeing my mom work with the community for a very long time, I felt at ease when I started doing the same six years ago. Each project mirrors my experience with the world and incorporates fashion, culture and community.

DEVI Project

Inspired by the rawness of nature and the royalty of gold, silver, and silks, Mrigini Iyer digs through her memories of simple pleasures of life and creates her first solo collection under Meri Peti called the DEVI Project. The designs are effortless, yet you won't miss the complexity of the materials used while serving the everyday women who understand art and different forms of it. Carefully handpicked stones and crystals are assembled together to craft each and every jewelry by hand. The scarfs are hand dyed in different shibori techniques, giving each scarf its individual character. A blend of cotton and rayon sewn together with a silk border, resembling the 'pallu' of a saree.

Through Meri Peti’s first project, DEVI (a goddess in Sanskrit), combining arts, media artists and visual modes of communication, we want to amplify personal stories of art and success. This project focuses on giving a visual storytelling platform to amazing women through fashion, where people will not only purchase handmade jewelry designed and made in Canada but also learn about our models’ backstory through a short video providing a link to their work. Along with promoting stories, and identities, DEVI aims to inspire a younger demographic about the multitude of paths “professional” women take. DEVI will serve as a source of knowledge as well as a directory for those who browse the internet for a crafted ring or bracelet but will leave with a product and an experience - an experience they can store in their own Peti.
