Mel Hewgill is a menswear designer currently based in London, UK. Specialising in tailoring, knitwear and textiles, Hewgill pushes the boundaries of traditional menswear by embracing themes of male sensuality and femininity in her designs. She often references classical and twentieth century sculpture in her work. Hewgill was selected to be part of the University of Westminster BA Fashion catwalk show at London Fashion Week in June 2022, and to have her portfolio displayed on the British Fashion Council website. She has previous work experience at Simone Rocha and Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, as well as with knitwear designer Cecile Tulkens.

Sobreteixims

Exploring themes of surrealism and absurdity, designer Mel Hewgill references the work of artist Joan Miró and historical photographs of clown costumes to create her menswear collection, Sobreteixims. Embracing Miro’s mantra: “The simplest things give me ideas,” Mel creates playfully oversized, draped silhouettes that harness harlequin diamond motifs within tailoring and celebrate the simplicity of stripes. The expressive textures of Miró’s tapestry pieces inform striking hand-knitted pieces, referencing the artist’s early textile works known as ‘sobreteixims’, (translated from Catalan as ‘superimposed’ or ‘overwhelmed’). Flamboyance, colour and fun emerge as a breath of fresh air in this accomplished menswear statement.
