There’s no doubt that today's fashion world is very destructive. After studying fashion design for 3 years, I’ve realised that although we strive for sustainability and innovation, but never really question the fundamentals of the western fashion world that we want to change. So the aim of my collection was to critically analyse western fashion through the lens of another culture.
I was particularly drawn to traditional Japanese fashion, which is distant in time and space yet very popular. In my designs I was exploring traditional Japanese fashion in many different ways and looking for new possibilities. I was rethinking western garments through the lens of Japanese fashion, diving into new aesthetic qualities or exploring possibilities of folding techniques.
But what fascinated me most was their approach to textiles, which can be characterized by zero-waste practices and respect for the material they are working with.
Using Japanese inspiration and origami techniques, I was able to create some garments based on perfectly rectangular patterns. I worked with flat squares of fabric, folding them and achieving 3D forms in a completely different way than is usual in Western culture. Some of my design are seamless and I used press studs to keep the shape. The pieces can be unfolded at any time and the two-dimensional nature of the fabric remains intact.
All my looks are transformative to show transition from western and Japanese. My aim was to create transformations that change not only shape but also meaning. I wanted to show the contrast between different approaches to clothes and fabrics. In my collection you can see a kimono that transform into a corset, an origami shirt that transforms into a dress, an origami jumpsuit that can be recreated to achieve 3 different looks.
