My collection aims to honour the end of my university experience. The concept of the project resides in the understanding that change is inevitable. As a result, things are always coming to an end and in those moments is better to have a positive attitude about it.
To begin this project, I've explored the different ways of mourning and honouring loss in various cultures. I found an interesting contrast between the wester n and the Mexican way of understanding death. The wester n way contains a lot of pain a sadness to overcome loss but on the other hand, Mexican culture under stands it as part of the life cycle and prefers to honour and celebrate who they were while they were alive.
One of the elements that most inspired me in this collection was the Mexican "coronas", flower rosettes used to decorate griefs and altars on the day of death. As a result, I have explored drapes and volumes. I also wanted to create wearable memorial altars and to do so; the dresses consist of a combination of many different elements. My collection contains three gender-neutral dresses and was made solely with second-hand clothes and curtains.
I aim for my dresses to transmit an insight into what has been like the last four-year s of my life here in Aberdeen. At the same time, being able to thank and pay tribu te to all the people and places that made these years so special.
