Growing up in the South West, I’ve always been overwhelmingly obsessed with the landscape and the culture. Most of my childhood I relate back to the desert, I have a desert heart I’ve always said. I have memories in the sage, hiking and camping and watching the sunrise from the back of our family's van as we cross Colorado into New Mexico. I feel calm there. I love how beautiful and rich the desert and the natural rock formations are, and how harsh and unpredictable the weather can be. The color palettes I settle on I’ve come to realize are the colors of my house, filled with cochina dolls and Indian pottery. It’s the color of sage and sand, but also the metallic reflection and mirages caused by heat that shimmers and tricks your eyes in the desert. Mint, peach sand, and reflective silver. My first collection reflects the organic shapes of the desert in many ways, however it relates to the necessities of desert active/travel wear. I believe that clothing should be functional, and in the desert functionality is of the utmost importance. My work continually reflects traditional American work wear/athletic aesthetics, but through a feminine color palette and luxury in material. Layers as any good explorers know, are the most important, so I explore the necessity of outerwear, and clothing that can be altered to suit its immediate environment.
