Giving back value to something that has lost its value is the essence of the NOT INHERITED Collection. It is a personal approach of criticizing the fashion industry and the way it works today. Lynn Pearl has inherited beautiful fur coats from her grandmother that have cost her a fortune in the 70s and 80s and were extremely important to her. When Lynn Pearl found out that these same coats are almost worthless today, she decided to give them a new value. The name NOT INHERITED stands for this new value.
Influenced by the Japanese Kimono and the juxtaposing modern business suit, this collection makes a statement.
The Japanese Kimonos are some of the most breathtaking textiles in the world, and they are also some of the most thoroughly crafted, labor-intensive textiles ever created. They are all one-of-a-kind garments, and not factory produced. Kimonos are often hand-dyed, hand-stenciled, hand-embroidered, hand-painted, or some combination of all of these techniques. The kimono is considered a lifetime investment and is traditionally passed on from generation to generation. On the other hand I wanted to merge this elaborate kimono concept with the modern suit. A garment found in every bank and office today, for me is the representation of predatory capitalism, fast profits and money.
The materials selected and used in my collection are mostly natural fibers such as cottons, silks and (virgin) wools. In interaction with those fabrics I wanted to create excellence by modifying the fabrics with the use of hand-stitching and hand-painting, making each piece authentic, unique and to protect them from imitation. Furthermore, the use of hand craftsmanship should reveal, honor and symbolize the great work and craftsmanship, that have once been put into my grandmother’s fur coats. This collection should raise awareness and maybe be a thought-provoking impulse in relation to the fashion industry.
