Vietnamese-born, Melbourne-based fashion designer Kim Clark graduated with Master of Fashion Design from RMIT Melbourne in 2019. Kim creates fashion inspired from her passion for culture, art and human observation. Her designs challenge the notion of classic fashion forms and archetypes to investigate their fundamental elements and understand their significance to produce new projects that are fresh and have a strong connection with wearers.

Kim is conscious about sustainability in her practice, prioritising natural fabrics, sustainable sourcing, and applying minimal waste cutting methods in the production phase. She incorporates transformable, modular design in the development process to increase product value by allowing wearers to participate in the redesign process to expand garment’s life and function.

“over lapped” is inspired from my own journey of a Vietnamese married to an Australian to celebrate cross-culture. It reflects everyday aspect of life, from my husband work clothes wardrobe to my homeland memories.
The project investigates the relationships between fashion and culture manifest in form and flow and fundamental archetype elements of Western styles and traditional Vietnamese surface design techniques. The approach was to conceptualise an over lay of these two archetypes while expanding and restraining all elements for a fresh aesthetics yet remain faithful to their essence.
The developmental methodology relied heavily on an extensive prototyping process to achieve the desired silhouettes, shapes and form.
