Kai Gerhardt is a Berlin-based fashion and textile designer who primarily works with a black and white palette. The design of Gerhardt's garments is based on his own fabric creations, which lend his collections a distinctive and unique touch. With his 2015 BA graduate collection put your lights on, Gerhardt focused on new weaving techniques; in 2017 he launched his first comercial collection which find itself between streetstyle and avangarde; his 2019 MA graduate collection LET THE FUTURE BE HUMAN was informed by a concentration on innovative knitting technologies. Gerhardt’s approach to construction utilizes both classic tailoring and free draping to yield detailed and approachable pieces for a variety of wardrobes. In this way, he creates garments that fulfil their function but at the same time free themselves from their aesthetic tradition.

He studied fashion design at the University of the Arts Berlin. He gained work experience with the Berlin label Mads Dinesen, among others. He was nominated for the German Design Award 2017 and was awarded the European Fashion Award FASH in 2015. Its Magazine, ODDA Magazine and KALTBLUT Magazine have already reported on Kai Gerhardt's collections. In 2016, he presented his fashion as part of Berlin Fashion Week.

It is time to stop filing people we meet into categories. These groups are made with an assumption of safety and protection. But if we stop creating these separations, if we instead think only of the group “human”, then we can begin a new chapter for the future where we see ourselves and others as what we are: human beings. And from this understanding we will find a human way to encounter one another on equal ground.

The collection brings together different kinds of traditional clothes which were reworked, mixed and sampled so that many people could find approaches in it and get more connected to the work and the message within. The designer travel with this collection around the world to combine all this differences in one big thing with respect and patience for every pieces of the clothes. You might ask if it should be okay that somebody took something out of a culture or time he is not living in or involved. Kai Gerhardt says yes with this collection because working with this kind of open mind and the possibility for all to dicover things out of their own box is the only way to make it happen that we understand us more and treat us in a better way than before. Its not about "stealing" stealing something from someone - its about honor something in a personal way.
