Katie Jiang is a young designer based out of Brooklyn New York. She was born in Hunan China, but then moved to Boston when she was adopted. She started her journey in art through painting and mixed media, but soon discovered fashion design to be the best medium during high school. She uses her work as a way for her to shape and explore her identity. In her designs she likes to pull from memories, places, and emotions around her. She wants her concepts to be intimate to the designer, but easily relatable. With a strong interest in movement and small details, she makes ready to wear and slightly more experimental garments. She hopes to continue with more experimental shapes, colors, and textures in both ready to wear and more out of the ordinary styles of clothing.

Growing up in America, watching movies and television was always disappointing. I never saw anyone that looked like me. Or if I did see someone, they were never the main role and were playing a stereotype that America created as TYPE ROLES for Asian actors. The biggest blows were from any ROMANCE BASED MOVIES IN A HIGHSCHOOL. Which was ALL of the movies teenage Katie watched. The roles were always the same. The popular girl, the nerds, the jocks etc. All the MAIN ROLES WERE NEVER ASIAN people, and the love interests of the male lead was never an Asian female. Asians were given roles of characters BASED OFF OF STEREOTYPES, SIDEKICK ROLES, AND COMEDIC RELIEF. I was ashamed to be Chinese. Now as an adult, I see more representation and am proud. I don’t even mind the stereotypes, because sometimes they are not wrong, just hard to watch. In this collection, I’m GIVING the sidekick/secondary characters that I saw in the high school movies the MAIN ROLE. Proudly putting them as the popular girl or the jock, but keeping the pride of their culture and stereotype that america gave them.
