The 16th century Italian theatre ‘Commedia Dell’arte’ birthed the practice of improvised acting based on stock characters. Minimal yet effective costumes characterize each individual, portraying their persona and class without the aid of language. Traits of 9 characters (3 Lovers, 3 Servants, 3 Elders) were integrated into their silhouettes, embellishments and tone (White – Grey – Black).
