MY degree collection for Polimoda
Everything started from the inuktitut word “Nunavut” , this word has a huge meaning for Inuit.
It represents their physical land, but also their home, traditions and their legacy.
This term calls to my mind a feeling of belonging , tha’s why I decided to explore my own family traditions.
I grew up in my mother’s fur laboratory, where she repairs and alters exclusively vintage fur coats.
I tried to follow the same process thought my collection.
All the fur I have used come from scraps of old fur garments which have been left in her laboratories for years forgotten by their owners. I dyed and cut them into thousand stripes.
Then I assembled the garments following the traditional technique of “sgheronatura” or Intarsia.
I created an up cycling circle of material with zero waste and zero impact on the environment, using only recycled and organic materials.
My research started from the Inuit. I analyzed the ethnic garment of the ancient folk.
I’m captivated by their amazing crafts and traditions. They produce huge garments with bold silhouette made of seal skin and fur. The materials that they used fascinated me, because their use of seals is a real up cycling circle. Seal hunting is Inuit’s main source of income, they practice the tradition with respect and exclusively to safeguard their life and “Nuna” their land.
They live in a perfect example of zero waste society.
the collection is a manifesto for all the traditions that have died due to misinformation. Some traditions struggle to survive in the present. I think that is our duty to find a sustainable “way” to still celebrate them.
