Amina is an interdisciplinary artist and designer interested in exploration and reinterpretation of culture through various mediums and materials. In response to colorful ornate artefacts from her native tatar culture, she experiments with abstract motifs and linework, transforming personal drawings into a collection of surfaces and three-dimensional objects. Heavily influenced by her upbringing and cultural norms, her artistic practice is based on continual improvement and iteration. Her design methodology focuses on comfort both materially and socially. Amina explores the intimate relationship between the object and the maker by working with materials that hold responsive qualities and allow for intuitive expressions. Her organically shaped pieces carry the energy of the maker’s hand and hold a strong sense of physicality and delicacy.

Her first collection ARA - translated from Tatar as “the space in between two objects; interval, gap, distance”- is a modern exercise of tradition. The collection is rooted in the experience of moving permanent locations and questioning their permanence due to their changing status. Exploring the feeling of dislocation from the place of origin: what is left behind and what never leaves us. This collection is the reflection of the mixing cultures, conflicting nostalgic views of the motherland, weight of cultural belonging and the problematics of cultural preservation.
