“Give me your best years, your certainties, your light thoughts because being young and being afraid of the future made me tired”. Between these lines the concept of the collection was born.
A phrase that TALKS ABOUT new generations and compares them with the previous ones.
A daughter’s thought addressed to her father, mother and their youth. . . made of fun, parties and lightheartedness.
It is a very specific period, the one between the 70s and 80s, which in turn brings to mind an emblematic place: the number 254 of West 54th Street in New York. None other than the home of the historic Studio 54 club, the cradle of entertainment and the most coveted club in the world. In those few years of opening - it was active only from 1977 to 1980 - it became a real institution for its sumptuous performances as well as for the magnificence emanating from its visitors. Real kingdom of the ephemeral.
And it is on this last word that I have focused developing my research, as it is full of meaning and with different interpretation.
Ephemeral is a term that derives from the Greek ἐϕήμερος, composed of ἐπί «above» and ἡμέρα «day», literally “that lasts a single day” and by extension “that has a short duration”, such as fame, glory and material riches .
Ephemeral like that sparkling and splendid bubble that was created inside Studio 54. Glitter and sequins, lace, feathers and fringes, provocative dresses and attitudes aimed at enhancing wealth and extreme fun.
The temple of escape from real life, from the problems it brought and still carries with it. Here the ephemeral becomes escapism, a way to forget, although momentarily, about problems and dedicate only to “light thoughts”, labile and illusory.
However, the term ephemeral also refers to what is considered transitory, perishable and of little relevance, such as objects in our consumer society. Those extra things, fleeting and tem- porary, which have no real value and which are forgotten, crumpled up and thrown away almost immediately to be replaced by something else and become rubbish.
Hence the idea of including aspects of wrinkled and “dirty” knitwear in the research with treatments such as mal-dyed.
Finally, ephemeral is a word that in botany concerns those flowers that bloom for a few hours and then wither, or those plants that complete their entire life cycle in a very short space of time. All this translated into research with extremely fine and precarious materials and processes, such as openwork and lace-effect stitches.
Things so fragile that they require more attention and care. . . ephemeral by nature.
EFFIM_ERA talks about all of this: about pomp, escapism and light thoughts as much as about irrelevance, waste, refusal and also about innate delicacy and precariousness. Ephemeral is a word that normally has a negative value but in this regard we should ask ourselves a question: “Is it perhaps its “being for a day” that makes it so precious?”
