Xinyi had taken her BA textile design course at Central Saint Martins of college of arts and design, and MA at Chelsea college of arts. Xinyi is specialized in print as her good hand drawing skills. She is interested in finding different perfect combinations of materials. Leather embossing and silicone casting are her main techniques at her currently work.

How do women protect themselves? Is wearing clothes a protection and empowerment? People are always so fascinating about their look. Beauty can be a vision of empowerment, which is visible; protection is invisible but physical. Using layers illustrating the multipurpose of wearing clothes in this project. The inspirations are from sharkskin, morpho butterfly wings, honeycomb and nacre as armours in the nature world. They have their own unique beauty but also they are invisible to the human eyes and protection. Taking ideas of structures under the microscope of sharkskin, butterfly wings and nacre builds the transparent protective layer. Every woman has her own unique beauty, how to wear the layers as clothing and accessories on the body is her choice and identity. Combining the layers of leathers, organza fabrics, silicone rubbers and resin presents the collision of beauty and also transparent layer of silicone rubber and resin shows protection. In this collection, a layer is more about communicating between wearer to the environment. Using zips makes layer flexible and removable. A wearer is able to choose the layer she would like to wear. Clothes do speak.
