Mirja Pitkäärt is an Estonian designer based in Paris.
She graduated from the MA Fashion Artefact course at the London College of Fashion in 2014 after studying leather design at the Estonian Academy of Arts and textile design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
She has worked in Berlin, London and Paris for brands including Anja Bruhn, Fleet Ilya, Ally Capellino and Louis Vuitton on the design, development and production of high-end leather goods.
In 2014 she received the Accessories Collection of the Year award from the International Talent Support competition in Trieste, Italy.
Mirja is interested in accessories that sit between product and fashion design, using traditional as well as modern methods of manufacturing.

Objects of Enduring Value

Using a combination of traditional and industrial manufacturing I created artefacts that aim to encourage emotional value of everyday objects.
Placed between the field of rapidly changing fashion and technologically driven and mass-producing industrial design, my work is challenging both of these industries by intending to extend the lifespan of objects of use. The aim of the project was to materialise an attempt to design products of ordinary function that could enrich our daily life and do so for a sustained period of time.
Through the use of CNC-milling in close relation to traditional craft I created shapes in tactile materials such as wood and vegetable tanned leather aiming to emphasise tactile qualities of products.
The collection of artefacts is an illustration of my personal take on emotionally durable design projected on a selection of everyday objects.
